Classroom Update
Reading:
In Reading, we are working through a non-fiction unit. Students identified text features (diagrams, headings/subheadings, pictures with captions, etc.) and text structures (chronology, compare/contrast, problem/solution, etc.) in an expository non-fiction text. We are now moving on to narrative non-fiction. This week, students will be learning about story elements, characters, and literary devices (similies, metaphors, personification, etc.) in narrative non-fiction text.
Writing:
In Writing, we are in the beginning stage of our opinion writing. Students are choosing a person, place, or object that matters to them and writing an essay on why that specific person, place, or object means so much to them.
Math:
We are starting Topic 8 this week. Topic 8 teaches students how to multiply 2-digit by 2-digit numbers. Students will be using arrays and expanded algorithms to solve this type of problem. Again, it is important that students have their basic multiplication facts memorized in order to solve these multi-step math problems. You might find the links below helpful when working with your child on math facts.
Science:
Last week in Science, we finished a unit on matter. Students know the difference between mixtures/solutions and solutes/solvents. Students conducted a solubility test with a solute and solvent of their choice. We will now be discussing electricity. We will be talking about static electricity, circuits, conductors and insulators, and so much more.
